Minimal/Conscious Sedation

Minimal/Conscious Sedation

This is NOT the same as general anesthesia or IV sedation. The patient will NOT be put to sleep and placed on a breathing machine. Minimal sedation refers to a patient being in a state of mind that is relaxed and calm. The term conscious sedation is defined as a medically controlled state of depressed consciousness that allows the protective reflexes to be maintained; retains the patient’s ability to maintain a patent airway independently and continuously; and permits an appropriate response by the patient to physical stimulation or verbal command. This means that the patient is still arousable by physical stimulation and they are breathing fully by themselves.  Not every patient is a good candidate for this type of procedure. The doctor will evaluate the patient during their exam to determine if minimal sedation is an option. If they are approved for minimal sedation there will be an additional fee for this service added to their treatment plan. The patient is required to have a caregiver drive them to and from their appointment. This is not an option. This is mandatory. If the patient arrives with no caregiver present to drive them home, the drug will not be administered and no treatment will be performed, no exceptions. The patient’s blood pressure and heart rate will be monitored during the procedure as well as their percent oxygen level. Safety is our primary concern and we will not compromise our care standards under any condition. We ask that you please respect our policy to uphold safety regulations. Please schedule your appointment today to find out if you are a good candidate for minimal sedation for your procedure.
